ABOUT
ZACHARY LANE
LUTHIER
Zach is an accomplished violin and bow maker living in Brooklyn, NY since 2007. He specializes in the double bass and it's bows, both French and German. He also loves the smaller instruments and enjoys making, repairing, and restoring violins, violas, cellos, and their bows.
His curiosity in music and how it's made led him across the U.S. from New Mexico where he was born and raised, to Michigan for a masters degree in double bass performance, to New York City to study and perform.
Having worked in bicycle shops in New Mexico for years, Zach got a job in Brooklyn and payed the rent for his first year repairing bikes at a Trek flagship store. He later landed an apprenticeship at David Gage Stringed instruments and ended up working for 10 years in one of New York City's most bustling and renowned stringed instrument shops. It gave Zach invaluable experience, working with many celebrated performers and the finest instruments and bows from around the globe. During this time he was also busy performing regularly as a sideman and with his own projects.
In 2017 Zach attended a bow rehairing and maintenance course in Ashland, Ohio with award winning bow maker Rodney Mohr. This experience led to Zach's growing obsession with bows, their history, and the French school of making them.
In 2018 Zach started his own shop to concentrate on instrument and bow making, as well as high end repair and restoration. He has had the privilege of serving wonderful performers from ensembles like: The Knights, The Met Opera, Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, Brooklyn Rider, ACME ensemble, numerous broadway performers, and last but not least, many heavily recorded jazz artists, improvising musicians and recording artists who play at the Village Vanguard, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Blue Note, Smalls Jazz Club, and the list goes on.
He is currently a member of the Violin Society of America, The International Society of Bassists, and attended the 2019 Oberlin Restoration Workshop, focusing on bow restoration and making. Most recently Zach was a featured guest on the 2021 luthiers panel discussion at the virtual, International Society of Bassists Convention. He attended the 2022 and 2023 Oberlin Bow Makers Workshops and received training from some highly respected makers from around the globe including Eric Gagne, Lee Gutherie, David Forbes, Lauri Tanner, Tim Baker, Evan Orman, and Eben Bodach-Turner.
Zach made his first double bass under the direction of renowned maker Nick Lloyd in 2019-2020, and is looking forward to making more.
He continues his study of the crafts of instrument and bow making, and strives to create the finest sounding and playing instruments in the market today.
In addition to work, Zach tries to play the bass as much as possible, and record music in his home studio, and occasionally with some bands. He also enjoys natural wine, and spending time with his partner Lydia West :)
